Border Poll Conversation with Alex Kane

Welcome to irishborderpoll.com’s fourth ‘Border Poll Conversations’ video podcast. We chat to interesting people with interesting things to say about constitutional change, border polls, the future of the Union and a United Ireland.

In this podcast we chat with the most famous and respected of all unionist commentators, Alex Kane.

He talks about his early life growing up an orphan and the strong influence of his adoptive parents in shaping his open-minded outlook – particularly his father, a leading Unionist, Orangeman and Presbyterian.

We discuss the thorny issue of border poll criteria as Alex wonders if unionism will ever accept an agreed criteria.

He bemoans fractious political unionism, arguing that while inter-unionist finger pointing persists it means no one is making a positive case for the Union.

After the British General Election, Sinn Fein appears stronger and unionism weaker. We discuss the key takeaways.

For all of his great knowledge and intellect, Alex tells us that come a border poll he will vote with his heart rather than his head. His justification of heart over head is not to be missed!

Sinn Féin’s prospects of forming a government in the South of Ireland are declining. Yet he thinks more progress towards a border poll might be possible with a non-Sinn Féin government.

Alex once suggested that if there was a United Ireland he might not stick around in the country. He’s changed his mind. If there was a democratic vote for Unity in a border poll he tells us he would be happy to live in a United Ireland.
