irishborderpoll debates come to Belfast courtesy of Féile

irishborderpoll.com debates August 5th and 6th at Féile an Phobail, Belfast

There are a huge variety of Irish Unity related debates taking place at Féile in Belfast in the first ten days of August. We are delighted to be hosting the two debates below with a brilliant lineup of speakers. If you are in or near Belfast on August 5th and 6th come along and join us.

Is the Taoiseach a partitionist? If so, how do we achieve a successful Border Poll without him?

The Taoiseach says his Shared Ireland Unit has nothing whatsoever to do with Irish Unity and insists reconciliation must come before Unity. At best he appears lukewarm on reunification; others describe him as hostile to it. His insistence on reconciliation before Unity effectively hands unionists a veto against a United Ireland into perpetuity? How then should United Irelanders respond to this approach? If the Taoiseach is a partitionist how do we change his mind or build Irish Unity without him?

Speakers

Mairéad Farrell – Sinn Fein TD for Galway West and frontbencher spokesperson.
Gemma Brolly – Aontú Deputy Leader and representative for East Derry.
Colin Harvey Ireland’s Future board member and academic at Queen’s University.
Kevin Meagher irishborderpoll.com contributor and author – ‘A United Ireland’.

Tuesday August 5th, 5pm.

Do Culture Wars have the potential to weaken the Irish Unity project? Or, can we debate our differences well?

At times United Irelanders appear united on ‘Culture War’ questions. For example in defence of free expression – opposing British State attempts to criminalise Kneecap for highlighting the plight of the Palestinians. Or, opposing orchestrated campaigns to demonise and censor The Wolfe Tones because some newspapers, and politicians don’t like the songs they sing. But what happens when the Culture War issues begin to split United Irelanders?

From immigration to Trans Rights. Distinguishing Hate Speech from Free Speech? From Pro-Life to Pro-Choice. United Irelanders can hold very different views. Do these deeply held differences have the potential to weaken the Unity project moving forward? Or can we debate with generosity and civility, managing our differences well? This debate explores whether United Irelanders can rise above the toxic aspects of such disputes witnessed elsewhere to remain focused on the prize of Irish Unity?
